- Name: Katie Hassell
- Role: Spacecraft Thermal Engineer
- University: Brunel University
- Degree: Master's Aerospace Engineering
"As a Spacecraft Thermal Engineer I balance all the heat sources within a spacecraft that come from internally generated heat as well as external heat and the environment the space craft is in."
"I like space. I did Physics for my undergraduate degree and I did a Master's in Aerospace Engineering to make sure I got a job I wanted to do."
"Space provides a really unique environment for testing that we just can not do on earth - and spacecraft are cool!"
"Sometimes, the amount of work to get done looks like too much for the time available, particularly where we have a big spacecraft review coming up. The work becomes very intense, sometimes the time scales end up shortened because, for example, we haven’t received an instrument model when we needed it, or we end up with more work to do because the analysis has shown a problem that needs solving. "
"At that point, passion and teamwork are what gets you through; somehow it all comes together, we get the information to the customer on time and we have a design that works."
Training & Profiles
We are looking for graduates with passionate drive and sound commercial awareness to join our UK Graduate Programmes. And it’s not only for engineers; we are also seeking graduates for roles in Finance, Marketing, Project Management, Human Resources, Procurement and IT.
From day one, you will be assigned to a particular department and will be guided through the various placement opportunities that exist within your function, within the wider business and even with customers and suppliers.
The programme includes core technical and behavioural training elements that will form an integral part of your learning and help you become familiar with the company and culture.
You will also have considerable support during the scheme to ensure that your overall learning experience will complement your future career, including meetings with the:
- Line Manager, who will help with placement plans.
- Placement Manager, who will work with you to set tasks and objectives.
- Senior Level Career Mentors, to offer guidance and support during your career progression.
- Chartership Mentor, to help you gain appropriate professional accreditation to aid career progression.
- Graduate Programme Buddy: a past graduate who will provide guidance throughout the programme, as well as being a point of contact 3 months before the start of your new role.

The graduate programmes last for two to three years, and involve a series of structured rotational placements, to help develop your technical and management skills. Your placements might take place in the UK, or within our European locations, so you’ll gain a transnational overview of your division’s work.
Our graduates benefit from comprehensive training and support, to ensure that you reach your potential and grab every opportunity with both hands. With training courses, career planning, and, in some cases, chartership mentoring, you can drive your development in the direction you choose. We encourage you to own your career, and to take pride in building it, one journey at a time.
