Case Studies

  • Role: Associate Director
  • University: The university of Manchester
  • Degree: English and French

I started with CEB in April 2012 having graduated from The University of Manchester with a degree in English Literature and French. Upon graduation I initially worked as a PA, taking some time to debate the next serious step in my career. I knew I wanted a challenge, responsibility for something meaningful and also the opportunity to manage my own business.

With no firsthand experience of client facing activities, I had a lot to learn!

Why I picked CEB

The opportunity at CEB jumped out at me for several reasons though.

  • Firstly, CEB had a really good graduate teaching framework in place, with clear milestones, realistic progression timelines as well as a projected career path beyond the first few years.
  • Secondly, CEB offered the possibility of actually developing a new skill set while investing heavily in improving you as an individual.
  • Finally, CEB was the only company that I came across to trust graduates to interact directly with the most senior contacts at the client and prospect companies.

What I learned as a graduate trainee

Throughout my time on CEB's Sales and Services Professional Development Program, I have had an equal balance of new business development and account management responsibilities.

In business development I was responsible for calling into companies, finding the right contacts for us to be engaging with, assessing the best fit companies for the products we sell. Over time, I developed an acute understanding of the challenges faced by Executive Teams globally, and to apply this knowledge to build credibility in future interactions.

In account management, I was responsible for ensuring we were interacting with CEB members in the right way. A typical day included scheduling client calls to discuss our latest insight, finding out what projects clients are working on and aligning our support. In addition, I was proactively monitoring the use of our services in order to secure their business for yet another year.

Why you should join CEB

The best way to describe CEB's Sales and Services Professional Development Program is as a mixture of classroom based learning and on the job training. Regular training sessions are held to introduce you to different elements of both the sales and account management process, and each module teaches you something that you'll be able to apply both in your current role, and in future career prospects.

At different levels of the SSPD program, you get access to training from the senior management team, as well as ongoing feedback from your own manager. Learning from others is the core ethos of CEB, and it's also applied in how the program is run with no end of opportunities to learn from experienced professionals and high performers.

CEB Culture

It's really difficult to get an understanding of a company's culture when you interview for a job, so if I were to describe the office environment in a few words, it would be: supportive, approachable and helpful.

If you have the drive and determination to succeed, you'll be helped at every step of the way.
