The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team, based out of Brackley, UK, brings together over 1,300 dedicated and determined people that design, develop, manufacture, and race the cars driven by seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton and Grand Prix winner, George Russell.

Within the Teams Applied Science division, we apply Formula One talent to customer projects, and it is within this division that we now have opportunities to join as part of our Applied Science Graduate scheme. As part of this graduate scheme, you will work on exciting projects and be able to immerse yourself into the learning and experiences of a truly high-performing team.

Using a creative, analytical approach alongside detailed design work, you will support senior engineers with large projects as well as projects of your own. Supported and mentored by experienced engineers, you will develop your skills and knowledge, connecting the theory you have learnt into practice.

With the above in mind, we have an exciting opportunity for a Graduate Control Engineer. Based at our state-of-the-art campus in the UK, you will be part of a team that is responsible for supporting the control system at customer events, as well as developing control systems from concept to application, covering all aspects of design, calibration and signoff.

The role:
• Supporting control systems at customer events (both at trackside and factory)
• Perform data analysis and write algorithms to assess reliability and performance.
• Generate prompt and accurate reports to communicate faults, concerns and potential improvements during events.
• Identify improvements and assist with development to ensure robust and performant operation.

Candidate profile

Essential
• A strong academic background either with or working towards an appropriate technical Engineering Degree.
• (e.g. Control Systems, Mechanical or Electronic engineering, Cybernetics, Robotics) or other relevant STEM subject (e.g. Mathematics, Physics)
• Able to apply core engineering principles to multi-domain challenges (e.g., across electronic, mechanical, and hydraulic/pneumatic control systems).
• Practical understanding of control systems and implementation.
• Good communication skills and must be able to work effectively under pressure with tight deadlines.

Desirable
• Experience writing and testing control systems using Matlab / Simulink.
• Understanding of time series data analysis using Matlab, python or similar tools.
• Experience in any of the following fields is beneficial: HIL, Driver simulators, mathematical modelling, sensor fusion, software development, communications protocol definition & implementation (e.g. CAN, UDP), electro-hydraulic actuator control, machine-learning.
• Strong interest in motorsport.

You must be keen to develop yourself by applying your skills and understanding to practical engineering challenges.

The work location will be predominantly in the UK and may encompass working multiple weekends and attending trackside events.
