I started my scheme at ABF with the Westmill business in 2013, in Enfield where I was based in the warehouse completing improvement projects. Here I was able to really get stuck in to understanding processes, monitoring them and implementing improvements, for example in the returns process. I then went on to be a team leader in retorts at our Trafford site. Here I got the opportunity to manage a team of 7 and experience shift work and a day to day role of managing a shift, analysing KPIs and running engagement projects and briefings with my team.

At the moment I work shifts and today it was a 5.30am start. I started the day with a handover and then with my daily checks for health and safety, quality and production, I then completed the cell review meeting discussing the KPIs from yesterday, I ensure throughout the day that production is running smoothly and get the assistance of engineering should anything go wrong, I am constantly opening orders and issuing to them and completing paperwork to ensure traceability is followed. I will also need to ensure that we have enough stock in production to keep us running and put an order in for our next changeover, as this is a weekend shift I will also completed a consumables order and a stock count. If I get any spare time I will continue with an on- going project, mine at the moment is getting a counterbalance truck replaced. Finally I will ensure all my figures for the day have been added to cloud and my handover sheets and shift logs completed and I will leave by about 6.30pm.

My biggest achievement so far was probably getting the opportunity to present my customer returns project to George Weston, CEO of ABF. That was the most exciting day of my life!

I joined the Allied Technical Centre (ATC) graduate scheme after completing a 4 year degree in Nutrition and Food Science with Industrial Training at the University of Reading. I am currently in my 3rd placement of 7 as I work my way through different roles in the business, learning all about the activities ATC do and where ATC sits alongside Allied Bakeries and Allied Mills.

For the first few months I spent time in the laboratory learning all about wheat and flour testing methods, and what wheat and flour characteristics are ideal for bread-making. My second placement was spent at a flour mill, where I was involved in the day to day running of the mill, the engineering team and the commercial team to name a few. This placement was very hands-on, with lots of responsibility given, and an invaluable experience as part of the graduate scheme.

My current placement is in Technical Assurance, where my day can be very varied. For example, this can involve reviewing nutrition profiles of current products, calculating the nutrition profiles of potential products in NPD projects, checking product labels comply with legislation, creating quality attribute sheets bakeries must refer to in order to maintain a product with desired characteristics, etc.

Future placements will be spent in an on-site bakery technical team, with the customer brand technical team and in the food safety team. My biggest achievement so far was the project I completed while at the flour mill. I led a project to reflow the direction of flour stocks in order to improve flour distribution in a number of machines. It was a challenge fitting this into the milling schedule and asking colleagues with much more experience and expertise to complete specific tasks, but very satisfying and rewarding to complete.

I've loved working in a customer-facing role that allows me to interact with so many internal and external stakeholders on a daily basis. I've kick-started my career in a role that gives me real responsibility, while I learn about the industry and bring my own skills to the team. I look forward to developing even further within ABF after such an enjoyable and stretching year.

Training & Profiles

One of the key focus areas of our graduate scheme is on your development. Alongside a buddy and mentor to help you find your way through the business, have career conversations and provide insight and support, all of our graduates also receive a great deal of training.

As a cohort, you will build strong relationships through experiencing a breadth of core management training together, from Presentation Skills, to Time Management (and plenty in between!). Additionally, you will build your skills and knowledge of the function in which you work through specific training or qualifications. For example, those joining our Customer Development scheme will get negotiation training, and those joining HR will be supported to achieve a CIPD qualification. Each scheme offers the appropriate training to best equip you in growing and performing throughout your career.
