Graduates lack skills but job market is growing

Lack of skillsAccording to the latest survey by the Association of Graduate Recruiters the graduate job market is growing, but employers are struggling to find properly skilled candidates.

In a preview of the Association of Graduate Recruiters Survey, due out in September, the organisation has revealed some of their findings. The organisation found that while the graduate job market is growing and 'buoyant', some employers are struggling to find graduates with the right skills.

According to the survey, although there was an increase in the volume of vacancies, many of these were remaining unfilled because of the lack of necessary skills. Among the highest of these were graduate roles in Accountancy with 27%. Other fields that were struggling to find suitably skilled graduates were IT, Electrical Engineering and Financial Management with 26%, 20% and 18% of roles left unfilled respectively.

Despite some employers struggling to find appropriately skilled employees, the Association of Graduate Recruiters found that the volume of vacancies was increasing. From surveying its members the Association found a rise in vacancies of 12%. Members also warned that they have opportunities for graduates across the United Kingdom and graduates should seriously consider work outside of London and the South East.

Stephen Isherwood, Chief executive of the Association of Graduate Recruiters said 'The job market for graduates is buoyant. Many employers are still recruiting for training schemes that will start this year. But students shouldn't be complacent.'

'Our AGR members have said that many candidates' applications are not thought through. Employers are looking for a combination of skills, knowledge and attitude. Show why you want to work for the company and take the time to complete your application thoroughly - spelling mistakes don't help.'
