I am just about to graduate with a BSC (Hons) Degree in construction management and I have no practical experience as when I was meant to get an industrial placements many companies were unable to offer these positions due to financial problems.

I would like to know if anyone knows of any graduate schemes that are available, or any positions which would be suitable.

Hi Clair,

I would start by looking at all the top 100 construction firm grad schemes. Bechtel, Skanska, Babcock etc.

Hope that helps!

Hi Clair,

I applied for a Balfour Beatty graduate scheme last year, they wanted construction management grads.

There are so many companies looking for construction management, you picked a good degree (like me!). Try the big companies like Amy, Wates, Arup etc, you can also can find some great smaller construction companies looking for grads, just look out for them!

Good luck Clair,

Aalap

Hi All
Has anyone had any experience of the Miller graduate scheme i.e. the interview process/potential questions they may ask? As I have a telephone interview next week.

Thanks

by Jenny on 26 July 2012 20:24

Hi Dave,

Have you had your telephone interview yet? I had mine today and it was pretty straight forward. They asked me my motivations for applying to miller, what 3 skills i thought were most important, a little bit about uni and what my aspirations were. Half an hour went so quickly!

Hi Dave
Good to hear about your interview...I would appreciate if tell me what did u reply to these questions . They would help other graduatesto learn how to answer the questions

by Dave on 31 July 2012 12:12

HI All,
Apologies for the late reply as I have been fortunate enough to see some Olympic events in London. Yes I had my interview and the process was somewhat similar to the experience of Jenny, though not sure which pathway she was interviewed for (I applied for the Business pathway)? Hope to hear back soon.
Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave,

I applied for the technical pathway and have now got through to the Verbal Reasoning Test. How did you do?

by Adam on 13 August 2012 14:12

Hi guys,

I did my Miller Verbal Reasoning Test yesterday. You didn't have a lot of time so if anyone has not done it yet make sure you do the practice questions a couple of times to get the hang of it.

If anyone has done it already, how did you find it?

by Jenny on 14 August 2012 18:35

Hi Adam,

I did mine the other day as well...the actual test is so much harder than the practise one isnt it! I felt like I answered 'cannot say' to too many questions but its so hard to judge how you have done! How do you think yours went? Which pathway are you applying for?

by Tyrone on 21 August 2012 09:30

Hi Adam and Jenny,

I just wanted to say thanks for writing on this thread!

It takes quite an un-selfish person to come back and give advice.

It's helped alot!

by Adam on 03 September 2012 15:38

Hi Jenny,

Sorry for the late reply. It is very hard to judge how you have done as you have to remember that you are using ONLY what the text says and not what it implies. I'm applying for the Technical Pathway by the way.

I did find out last week that I passed and I am now waiting for a time and date for a 1 hour face-to-face interview. How did you do?

Not a problem for the advice Tyrone, hope it helps.

Clair have you managed to secure a position with a company yet? If you haven't yet I would advise you to search agency sites and directgov jobs for assistant/trainee site manager jobs etc. This is a good way to find smaller positions that require little or no experience. Also consider other roles within companies that also work in the area you want to specialise in, it is a good way to get your foot in the door. Also send out loads of speculative applications, you only get a small turn around as I have had 3 replies out of about 35 speculative applications, but that's better than nothing. Good luck.

Hi Adam,

Ive got an interview as well! Which region are you applying for? Im going for midlands south west. Going to start the presentation today, they like to test us dont they :-)

Clair, I would advise phoning companies and asking if they are taking anyone for work experience, particularly smaller contractors and consultancies. I have been at a project management consultancy for 3 weeks now and whilst it has been an invaluable learning experience, they will also be reviewing my performance at the end of next week with a view to possibly offering me a job. Hope you manage to find something!

by Adam on 17 September 2012 13:06

Hi Jenny,

Well done, I'm going for the same region too. Yeah I started my presentation the other day, it's like being back at uni!

Adam,

Well done to you to! What time and date is your interview? Mines at 10.30 on the 26th, might see you there!

by Adam on 18 September 2012 13:41

Hi Jenny,

I'm there on the 26th too. Not until 2.30pm though, so I'll miss you by a couple of hours. Good luck!
