    The online application was very straightforward. After about 24 hours I received an email inviting me to attend an interview at a centre. I was asked for a list of five centres that would be convenient for me and a list of dates over the following two weeks. About a week later I attended the centre interview. The staff were very welcoming and friendly. They gave me a tour of the centre and then we sat down to have a discussion about the company, the role and my skills/experiences. They asked a number of questions (including scenario-based ones). After this we carried out a role-play task where I was required to initiate and lead a conversation, in which the goal was to sell a gym membership and try to secure a free trial. I was nervous for this, but you are given a chance to repeat it after receiving feedback from one of the interviewers. This was very helpful. It is important to really get to know the customer. At the end of the interview I was given the opportunity to work with some of the children. I loved this!

    A couple of days later I received a phone call and an email inviting me to the assessment day in Guildford (4 days later).

    The questions were to be expected (leadership, challenges at work, scenario-based questions etc.)

    Make sure you research the company, its vision and its values. Try to be concise in your answers/responses. They want to see your personality, so try to be relaxed and just be you! Read through the information that they send you prior to your interviews and make sure you listen to the feedback. They want you to do well!

    Experiences at the assessment centre

    The day started at 9:30am and was at the company's head office in Guildford. There were ten other candidates who were all lovely and we all received packs with our timetable for the day.

    The team kicked off the day with a presentation about Explore and the AD role. This was informative and lasted about 30 minutes. The interviewers all introduced themselves to us.

    Prior to the assessment day we were informed that we needed to prepare a five minute presentation about how our skills/experiences would contribute to the company's visions. This was presented to two interviewers. After this, it was the 'role-play' task, where I had to try to sell Explore to a customer in a shopping centre. This time I was only asked to carry out the role-play once. I was given a chance to reflect before they gave me feedback. This was all very helpful. Make sure you really get to know the customer.

    I had a one-to-one interview with a member of the recruitment team which was very relaxed. There were a number of 'normal' interview questions, scenario-based questions and a discussion about logistics.

    Next was a basic maths and English test. No preparation was needed.

    Finally, we were split in to groups and asked to complete a group task. They are looking to see how well you work in a team.

    Overall, it was a great day. Remember you are not 'competing' against other candidates as everyone will have different start dates and locations in mind. This made the environment very positive and friendly.

    After applying online you have a phone interview followed by a a centre interview if you reach the next stage. The final stage is an Assessment Day at their HQ in Guilford. Cardiff and attended the Assessment Day in Guildford. I applied in November and attended the Assessment Day in January but it would have been a shorter time period if I did not have to reschedule around my University schedule. The phone interview was pleasant and quite quick. As long as you have done thorough preparation beforehand, it should not be difficult. Explore Learning's website has everything necessary to learn about the company and see if your values coincide with theirs. By the end of the phone interview, I was told that I had been successful and I was able to choose a centre to have my second face-to-face interview.

    I chose a centre close to where I go to university, so don't worry if you are living between cities at the time of application. I received a tour of the centre before the interview which was nice. The interview itself was slightly more intense, I was interviewed by two centre directors. They asked me a few questions then proceeded into the role play. You have two chances at the roleplay after receiving feedback on your first turn. I loved this aspect, it is so important to know where and how you can improve and then make real-time changes.

    The day after this centre interview, I received an email saying I have been accepted for the Assessment Day in Guilford (very quick process).

    Most difficult question

    Should you greet and attempt to secure a trial session with a client that has just walked into the centre when you have just been given an important task to complete by the end of your work day?

    Interview tips

    Be yourself! It is very obvious if you are pretending to be invested in the company when you are not. By the time you have reached the Assessment Day you should feel confident in yourself and how suited you are to the role. The Assessment Centre, its atmosphere, the staff and the activities do give a real insight to life at Explore Learning and I believe that you will be perfect for the job if you enjoy the entire process.

    Experiences at the assessment centre

    The Assessment Day was an enjoyable experience and I felt as though I was surrounded by people who were all enthusiastic and passionate about the company. It definitely made me want to work here more. It started with an introduction to the company and staff, followed by individual interviews, presentations, role play, group exercise and a Maths and English test. The group exercise is the last thing to take place but the other activities are done in a randomised order.

    The individual interviews were similar to ones we've done previously so it was a nice beginning to the day. I did the presentation and role play next. I had the choice of which one to do first, I picked the personal compass presentation first. I did well in my presentation, I was clear, energetic and passionate about who I am, my goals, and what made me suitable for Explore Learning. The role play was more challenging but the feedback I received was very helpful. The English and Maths tests were quick and not too difficult. The group exercise was good but also a bit difficult, only because you want to appear as a team and let everyone have their opportunity to shine, however, you have to put your own best foot forward too. My tip would be to listen well to each other and encourage others to speak as well as speaking yourself.

    The atmosphere was incredible, I did not feel as though I was in competition with my peers, rather, we all had similar goals and were looking forward to displaying our capabilities. All the staff were welcoming and in fact, inspirational. The Assessment centre made me want to grow with this ever-growing company.

    Centre interivew-

    I was interviewed by the Centre Director and Assistant Director who sat me down and asking some standard interview questions- 'how would you feel being in charge of a team?', 'which of these duties jump out to you as things you'd excel at?'.
    We then did a role play where I had to stop the AD and promote a gym and try to get him booked in for a free trial day. The idea was to ask as many questions and get to know them as well as possible to tailor the gym membership to their likes.

    Interview tips

    Do some prep about the company for the role play- not so much stats or figures but enough to feel confident.

    Maybe revisit BBC Bitesize for a little maths refresher if it's been a while.

    Show them your personality and passion for the job.

    Experiences at the assessment centre

    Lovely vibe! A very happy team of about six who introduced themselves.
    There were nine candidates who had travelled to Guildford from as far afield as Leicester. We were forewarned that we would have to prepare a presentation about ourselves and do another role play , a numeracy test, a literacy test, another standard interview and a group activity.
    Numeracy and literacy tests- After a half an hour welcome presentation from the team, my schedule sent me and one other girl to complete our tests while the others were doing different tasks in different rooms. We weren't supervised and the tests were straightforward. Sort of year 7/8 standard maths- percentages, decimals etc, probability etc. The English was highlighting mistakes on a passage of writing and correcting it. Then a 'where' or 'wear', 'their' or 'they're' selection of questions.

    Presentation- referred to as a 'personal compass' : where have you come from; where are you going; what makes you happy; what makes you great. Very straightforward- they just want to see your communication skills in action. I put lots of photos of me mucking around in there as they said they were keen to see some personality! This and the role play were done with just one interviewer present.

    Role play- This time you're pretending to stop a mum in a shopping centre and promote Explore Learning as an employee. The idea of this seemed to freak a lot of people out but it's nowhere near as bad as it seems. Just be smiley and friendly and get to know the 'mum'. Also done with just one interviewer present.

    I then had a half an hour break while other candidates came and went to their different appointments. We had a chance to chat and have a laugh- it was a relaxed atmosphere where we all agreed it had been a while since we thought about year 8 maths.

    I then had another interview with a different member of the Careers team which was your run of the mill interview. I talked about my background, education, what I'd thought of the day so far, what did I think I'd excel at in the job or find difficult, and some scenario questions- whatever it is, customer/families/kids come first!

    Lastly the nine of us were split in to two groups and asked to create a presentation together about how to bump membership in an Explore centre. They just want to see how you cooperate as a team and what role you play in a group dynamic.

    During the breaks I imagine they continue to assess subtly and keep an eye on what you're like while 'off duty'. As long as you are a confident speaker and enthusiastic- they'll like you.

    Interview process

    I had no phone interview but went straight to a centre interview. This took the format of a tour of the centre and description of the role with the centre director. This was a bit annoying, especially the information on the role, as I'd thoroughly researched the job and the company and wanted to show that I knew all this, rather than being told! This was followed by some questions about my application and cv along with some scenario questions with both the centre director and one of the assistant directors, which lasted about half an hour. Then there was the role play, from which I was given useful feedback and then repeated. After that was some interaction with the kids, with one of the tutors which went on for about 15 minutes.

    Scenario questions such as 'what would you do if the centre director was away for a while and performance among the staff started to drop?'

    Interview tips

    Do your research, especially on marketing and sales techniques. Look through information provided carefully by the company and listen to centre interview feedback before the assessment centre. Relax in both interviews, everyone seems very nice and they really want to just get to know you.

    Experiences at the assessment centre

    The day started with a talk from the operations director which lasted about half an hour on the company overall. This was followed by an interview with one of the graduate recruitment managers on my application and some management scenario questions. Then came the marketing presentation which lasted 5 minutes followed by some questions with another of the graduate recruitment managers followed by the role play. Then was the literacy and numeracy task which we could do in our own time. In the afternoon was the group task which involved choosing a selection of objects to keep on a sinking ship and having to present our findings within a small timeframe.

    Interview process

    The initial interview was good. I personally left with the thought that I did not get the job. But that was more my worry and because I really couldn't read my interviewers. Apart from that, the process went smoothly and they made you feel comfortable and the environment is friendly. I also enjoyed the chance to interact with the children during the interview.

    The most difficult question I was asked was during my interview on the assessment day. It was my scenario question, which I ended up getting wrong.

    My advice to anyone interested in applying is to make sure you do your research into the company and the role you are applying for. Make sure that you show your passion and enthusiasm of the job, but make sure that it is real and genuine. Also be confident in yourself.

    You have an idea of what tasks you're going to be doing before you go, but you still don't know what to expect with the people and the other candidates. However, it turned out to be a great day. The interviewers were super friendly and we as candidates were friends by the end of the day. Certain tasks that we had to perform made us more nervous than others and it varied for each person. However, you get it done and you realise you made yourself worry for nothing.

    Make sure you do your research. Every member of the Explore Learning team are passionate about the company so make sure you show your passion too! Let your personality shine through and just enjoy it.

    Experiences at the assessment centre

    The assessment centre was really relaxed and friendly, they really did make me feel comfortable right away! There is lots of time to relax and meet the other candidates, also tea and coffee was available throughout the day. Every candidate had an individual timetable for each activity.
    There were many tasks throughout the day including: a third interview, a presentation, a role play, a maths and literacy exercise and a group task. They also took us all out for lunch which was lovely! They give you information about the assessment day well in advance so don't worry, there is plenty of time to prepare for the role play and the presentation.
    All in all, the whole day was handled brilliantly and I think every candidate felt at ease throughout it.

    Interview process

    First off there was a phone interview, which was basically just a brief chat about expectations of the role and past work experience. Once I made it through this stage, I was invited to an interview at one of the Explore Learning centres near my home.

    This interview was two hours long, and was divided into two halves. The first half was comprised of a more detailed discussion about the role of an Assistant Director, a role play exercise and more questions about my past work experience and how I may handle difficult situations at work. An awareness of marketing strategies is also helpful during this part of the interview. The second part of the interview was an hour working with the children while they were being tutored, which was fun!

    After this, I was put through to an Assessment Centre day at Guildford, which lasted from 9 till 4.30. The day involved a short presentation, a one on one interview, two written assessments and a group task. We were also given a presentation about the company, and taken out to lunch half way through the day.

    Most difficult question

    The most difficult questions were those that involved unfamiliar scenarios to myself, such as having to chose one task to prioritise over another, or being asked how I would deal with doubts from parents about my age (21) or relative lack of experience.

    Interview tips

    Prepare! Make sure you familiarise yourself with the website and what will be expected of you as an Assistant Director. An awareness of marketing strategies is also helpful, as is previous job experience of any kind that demonstrates you can work in a team and take responsibility for your actions.

    It is also important to not be too formal, something that was picked up on in my first face to face interview - they like your personality to come through as it is a very friendly company.

    The first task was a presentation about a marketing strategy I would adopt with the goal of signing up potential members to free trials. It lasted 5 minutes and was followed by a few questions.

    The second was a one to one interview with two senior management staff, which was more informal and involved scenario questions and probes into why I applied for the role.

    The written tasks were to test literary and maths competence

    For the final group task we were split into two teams, and had to work together to select items off a list that we would want with us if we found ourselves lost at sea. We had to decide together which ones we would prioritise and then present the final list to all of the interviewers.

    Interview process

    The first stage of the AD position was the application form online, consisting of about 8 questions. Provide as much detail as possible and give good examples of your experiences.
    The second stage of the process, was an interview held at one of the centres. I was interviewed by the Centre Director, and there was an Assistant Director on hand as well who took notes throughout. The whole session lasted about 2 hours. I was shown around the centre, and given the logistics about how it worked. I would advise to do plenty of research before you arrive so that you have plenty of questions to ask about the centre - show your enthusiasm for the centre and let your personality shine.
    I was then sat down and asked about my experiences and skills. I was given a few scenarios to deal with for example, if the CD was away and there was an urgent issue, what I do?
    The final stage was a role play exercise. I had to pretend to stop someone in the street and promote a gym membership. The goal was to sign the person up for a free trial. Just make sure you use your communication skills effectively and ask questions to engage the client. There is also a chance to repeat the role play too.

    Most difficult question

    The scenario questions were perhaps the most difficult part of the day, but just use your common sense. If they question your answer, explain the problems that you would have and maintain a positive attitude throughout. This will show your confidence in problematic situations. And keep smiling! We are not all perfect, and they are just looking for someone who is willing to learn and take on the challenges that will be involved in the job.

    Interview tips

    Explore are really looking for passionate and enthusiastic people who are confident to take on the challenges that the role can bring. Really demonstrate how your experiences will aid you in the role and be positive throughout the day. Ask questions, be engaged, and enjoy it. If you get things wrong, don't worry. Recognise your mistakes and turn it into a positive - show that you can learn quickly. It is a fantastic company to work for and if you show that you want to work for them, your chances of being given the role are a lot higher.

    The day started with a welcome presentation. A schedule had been created for each person of when they would do their verbal/numerical reasoning test (which wasn't difficult), marketing presentation, and another for the one-on-one interview. There is a fair bit of waiting around at this part of the day, but everyone was so lovely and it wasn't one of those uncomfortable assessment days where you feel you are in competition with everyone. Yes there is an element of competition, but the other candidates were all lovely and we all chatted about our experiences.
    The marketing presentation (task given before assessment day itself): my task was to create a sales event or marketing initiative and present it to one of the interviewers. Be clear, concise and confident. I typed up my presentation, but maintain eye contact and be positive about your idea.
    The one-on-one interview: this was more about your experiences and skills and gives you the opportunity to really sell yourself. Be confident throughout and ask questions; show your interest and passion to work for Explore. There were a few more scenario questions at this point too.
    We were then taken to Zizzi's for lunch; the most stressful part of the day was over so it was nice to just relax and chat with the other candidates and managerial staff.
    The afternoon consisted of a group activity. We started by going around the room and picking words out of a hat. We then had to talk about that word for 1 minute. Be imaginative and funny if you can! We were then split into 2 groups and given a survival scenario; rating objects in order of importance.
    The day then ended, and we were told we would find out within 3 working days if we were successful.

    Interview process

    First, I had a telephone interview just to go over my application form and CV. They told me straight away that I had made it to the next stage.

    For the interview stage, I was interview by the Director and one of the Assistant Directors at the centre. I was given a tour of the centre first. I had to prepare a 5 minute role play to promote a gym to someone in a supermarket. This went really well, and they let you do it again. You must keep asking them questions and getting to know them - they like that! For the rest of the interview they asked me competency and scenario questions. I got to spend a short time with the children, but there were only 3 there due to it being the holidays. I got to talk to them and the tutor they were with.

    Overall, they were really friendly and made you feel at ease during the interview.

    Most difficult question

    The questions weren't overly difficult, as I had prepared a lot for most of them. I guess the scenario questions were the hardest as you never quite know what they'll ask.

    Interview tips

    Unfortunately, I didn't make it to the Assessment Day stage. The feedback they gave me was that my managerial style wasn't assertive enough, so this may be a hint to what they want! Make sure you make a real effort when you get to speak to the children. I wish I was able to have more time with them and that there were more of them there so I could've have shown them more of my ability.

    I personally did not have to have a telephone interview due to my experience, but have seen many do.
    The interview was very relaxing and the staff put you at ease. Firstly they take you on a little tour of the centre and let you ask questions (they liked being asked questions- so do your research). We then had a sit down and spoke about marketing, teamwork, leadership and working with children. The questions were easy to answer providing you had prepared. There were a lot of scenario based questions, but they were really common sense. I then had to do my role play (which you have to prepare in advance). This was scary at first but then they give you feedback and you get the chance to act on the feedback and do it again.

    After the initial interview I was given the chance to play on the systems they use before working with the children.

    You need to be prepared! Look on there website and get a feel for what they expect from an assistant director. It might be handy to go into one of the centres and see what they do, so when you have your chance to work with the children you're prepared. Everyone freaks out with the role play but when you're in there it's actually not that bad.... so don't worry!

    The full recruitment process involves answering numerous application questions, attending a centre interview, and then attending a full assessment day at the Head Office in Guildford. The centre interview involves being shown around one of your selected centres, and then being interviewed by two current directors. The interview is quite long and involves scenario questions, as well as competency questions. You are then observed tutoring the children for around 20-30 minutes. If you are successful, you are invited to their Head Office. This is a full day of assessments with around 13 other candidates, including a marketing presentation, a role play, a maths/english assessment, an interview, lunch at Zizzi's with the interviewers, and a group task with a presentation.

    We were given scenario questions and asked what we would do in certain situations, many of which we may not have encountered before.

    Ensure that you are very interactive with the children during your centre interview - don't be afraid to get stuck in as if you are their tutor. The key is to build a rapport with the children in the zones you are assigned to. Be enthusiastic and make sure you know a lot about the company, and are prepared to think on your feet on be creative on the assessment day.

    Aside from interviews, we also had tasks that required confidence and thinking on our feet. One of these was all having to write a word on a piece of paper, putting them all into a bowl, and then picking one of the pieces of paper and immediately talking non-stop about that word for a minute in front of the group and assessors. We also had a group task to agree on an order of importance for specific items and then presenting our ideas to the assessors, whilst answering their questions about our decisions.

    It began with a tour of the Explore Learning Centre before sitting down with 2 of the 3 managers and having an interview. The atmosphere was informal, although be sure to dress appropriately. The interview was about 40 mins long, beginning with questions about experience, the part of the job you think you'll succeed in most, and your chance to ask any questions.
    Lastly, There's the opportunity to interact with the children and you're observed while doing this.

    The role play was most difficult for me. The topic was given the day before (via email) - I had to sell a gym membership. A tip for this is to bring your own material, eg business card, flyer, etc.

    Interview tips

    The environment is relaxed and informal, it really puts you at ease. Be sure to check Explore Learning's website prior to the interview as some questions are there to nite your preparation for the interview.

    The interview process was in three stages - phone interview, centre interview and assessment day. The phone interview included many of the generic questions - why Explore Learning, why this role, what can you bring to Explore etc. They asked situational questions in all face-to-face interviews so for that just remember the customer always comes first.

    The centre interview consisted of a face to face interview, a sales role play and around ten minutes interacting with the children. The face to face interview asked similar questions to the telephone interview. The sales role pay you should prepare for in advance, and they are really looking for you to engage with the customer, so ask loads of questions. For example my role play was for a gym free trail, so ask questions around their fitness, what they are looking for in a gym etc, and then cater the information to their needs. As for the children exercise, they just want to see how you interact, so just be friendly.

    Most difficult question

    All interviews were very relaxed and friendly, as they wanted to see your personality and passion shine through. So prepare for it as you would for any other interview, by researching the company values and illustrating with examples how you are like that yourself. I'd say the key thing for success with Explore Learning is to show enthusiasm and passion for education and children - helping children reach their potential. Also, they are looking for team players and people willing to learn, so demonstrate this in group exercises.

    Interview tips

    The main tip for succeeding with Explore is you personality and enthusiasm. They want team players and so are watching you even during the break sessions, to see how you interact with others. Despite feeling that I did not do my best, I got the job with Explore, as they said my friendly team player attitude, enthusiasm and willingness to learn all shown through .

    Experiences at the assessment centre

    The assessment centre was very relaxed, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. We had a face to face interview, a personal compass presentation (on who we are and where we plan to go), a sales role play and a group exercise. You have to prepare the presentation and sales role play before hand. With the sales role play you are trying to book a free day trail for Explore Learning with a parent - main tip here would be to ask questions to get to know the customer. For example, ask their names, do they have any children, childrens ages, how are they doing in school etc. I struggled with this task as I found these questions were to probing and personal to ask someone straight away.

    In the group task we had to represent a charity, and debate why each of our charities deserved funding. This task was pushed for time, but the team demonstrated diplomatic behavior, as we all listened to one another and bounced off eachother when presenting back to the interviewers.

    The interview took place at a local Explore Learning centre. You undertake an initial interview with the Centre Director covering your background and transferable skills and then receive a tour of the Centre.

    Following this you are required to interact with a number of children whilst they go through their work for the day. This is nothing to worry about and the kids are happy to discuss their work and progress. My best advice would be to simply enjoy this process and be as natural with the children as possible.

    Most of the questions were relatively straightforward and typical fare although they will vary depending on your background and experience. There were no trick questions or attempts to catch you out, just be clear on your motivations for the role and your ability to handle the sales aspect.

    Make sure the role is for you and use websites like graduate-jobs.com to fully research it. I realised about half way through the day that the role was not exactly what I had expected nor something I would be interested in pursuing and thus struggled to motivate myself to take the group activity etc seriously, especially knowing I had spent the best part of £100 to attend the interview! I felt the management side of the role had been exaggerated and that the long term development I had hoped for wasn't really available at Explore. However if you enjoy working with children and basic sales work it seems this could be a fulfilling role.

    If you read up carefully on the role and the values of the company you should be fine. Little practical experience is required and your attitude is the most important factor. When undertaking the sales role-play, make a real effort to get to know the person you're speaking to and make sure to ask lots of questions.The recruitment staff were all pleasant, friendly and tried to put candidates at ease so don't worry beforehand about nerves.

    Experiences at the assessment centre

    An initial presentation on the company from the recruitment staff is followed by one on one interviews and a presentation that you will have prepared before hand. This can be done via whichever medium you prefer but the majority of candidates created powerpoint presentations. You then perform a sales roleplay, attempting to book a passer-by in for a free trial with Explore. There is also a simple maths and English test which requires no revision.

    After this you go out to lunch with the other candidates and members of the explore recruitment team. Finally you return to the office for a group presentation.

    The day was fairly well organised and had a relaxed atmosphere. There is a lot of down time between tasks to speak to other candidates and refreshments are provided. There are no expenses paid for travel however, which given that all assessment centres take place in Guildford is not ideal. Several candidates had come down from the North of England and had to pay considerable fees for train tickets and accommodation.

    The assessment centre was attended by 12 people. It was made up of a competency interview which lasted 15 minutes. This was followed by a pre-prepared presentation about your idea for a community event. Next there was a role play to tell a teacher about the services Explore Learning offers. In addition, there there a numerical test including fractions with questions asking how you would explain the answer to children. Then there was a literacy test which assessed your ability to find grammatical errors. Next, they took us out for lunch at Zizzi. After a lunch we had to write random words on pieces of paper. Then draw out the words and talk about the word for 2 minutes in front of the group. Finally, we had to group task about increasing membership at a gym which we then had to present to a panel who asked questions.

    The Interview at the Explore learning center in Woking was wonderful. I was able to learn more information about the company and really got to see how things worked. The center was active whilst the interview was taking place so you were really able to understand how the tutoring worked, and got to talk to some of the children and see what systems they were using. The actual interview consisted of a sales role play which was quite daunting, but they gave me lots of feedback and the opportunity to do the role play again. There was then a few scenario questions based on interacting with parents and children. I was a very fun interview, serious but being in the environment allowed you to relax more. The interview lasted around 2 hours, of which about 45 minutes consisted of talking to the children and helping them out with their work. This consisted of being introduced to one or two children and then left to your own devices, especially as the center was very busy.

    Most difficult question

    The most difficult questions were the ones that asked you how you would deal with children that aren't concentrating and how you would approach situations where the parents wish to take their children out of the program, as customer retention is a big part of the company's policy.

    Interview tips

    They really like to see personality, so just be yourself. And they are reliant on sales techniques and so I would recommend brushing up on the hard sell in order to push through the sales in the Role Plays.

    The assessment center involved a lot of sitting around. There were 12 of us there, and after the initial introduction film and presentation, we were given timetables that told us the times that we would have the two different interviews and the personal task which was a numeracy and literacy sheet. The interviews consisted of a talk about my CV and what skills I had that I could bring to the company and what skills I needed to work on. Whilst the other consisted of a Role Play of talking to a teacher in a school. Again they gave wonderful feedback for the Role Play, which is brilliant information to take further on to other interviews. We then had lunch and got to know the interviewers a bit more, as well as getting to know more about the company and each other. It is not a competitive interview, so the relaxed atmosphere means that some of the pressure is lifted off. Then we were tasked with a group presentation where we were in groups of 6 and had to come up with a 5 point plan to get more members into the gym by the end of the month. This was the only bit of the assessment day that I felt could have been organised or worded differently, as we were given 20 minutes to come up with our plan but when we presented to the interviewers it became clear that they just wanted us to have come to the idea of half price joining fee or the first month half price.

    Phone interview - brief (20 minutes) but decent questions regarding previous work experience, personal skills and qualities, how much I knew about the company/role, and scenario based questions. You are expected to have thoroughly researched the company and role to answer all questions in a fitting manner (i.e. all with relation to the qualities expected, the vision and values of the company, the requirements for the role). I was contacted within a week to arrange for a centre interview.

    Centre interview - starting with a centre tour by the Centre Director, I was given similar personality/experience/skills questions in a private interview with the CD and Assistant Director. Following this was a sales role play, which was performed twice with feedback after each trial. They are looking for your receptiveness and adaptability as well as sales patter, so listen carefully and incorporate elements back in the second time. Lastly there was a period of observed interaction with children, with feedback afterwards. Friendly and professional, I was contacted within 1 working day inviting me to the next Assessment Day.

    Do your research, really learn about the company and their culture/vision/values to help answer questions. Be confident in understanding the role (not just a teaching or managerial job), and if you have no sales experience make sure you do your research and practice before the interviews. Above all, be honest and genuine and friendly - they promote a supportive and family-like staff culture, so side-eyes and attitude do not go down well.

    10-4.30, the day felt longer because of lots of waiting periods while other candidates were interviewed. The area was designed to be friendly and welcoming however, so it was not unpleasant.

    Two individual interviews consist of a personal presentation, a sales role play (only once this time), and a skills-abilities interview. These are conducted privately with one interviewer, so no presenting or role playing in front of other candidates or staff. There was a short written task testing basic maths and English skills, and a short group activity in the afternoon designed to assess your team-work, response to other personalities, leadership, and cooperation.

    Interviewers are all team members who started as ADs and progressed through the ranks, and most applicants were recent (or soon-to-be) graduates.

    The interview process came in 2 parts with the initial interview held at a local Explore learning centre. This interview was very relaxed and short, with the aim of gaining a feel for the candidate and whether they would suit the job role. The second interview is held at a group assessment day within the head office in Guildford. The day is split up into different areas including one to one presentations, role play, numerical and literacy tasks and group assessments.

    The group task was the most difficult part of the second interview as it requires a concise group of individuals that are confident to work under time constraints. Many candidates struggled with the role play scenario in both interviews.

    Be prepared for role play in both interviews as it requires confidence and an understanding of sales and marketing to the general public. If you are successful and get through to the assessment day, make sure you are able to travel for a whole day to the Guildford centre. Some candidates did book a hotel and stay overnight in preparation of this. Do your research!

    The assessment centre was a big, bright and open space. The team offered snacks and refreshments throughout the day and were very friendly. The whole day allowed candidates to feel very relaxed and comfortable throughout the process. The only negative being that it is in Guildford and may be difficult for some candidates to get to.

    The interview process was very relaxed and definitely not something that you should be worried about; they are just looking for you to be yourself. I was nervous about the gym membership role-play but the interviewer got into character very well making it easier. Meeting the children was really enjoyable, you almost forget that you're in an interview. Just be sure to chat to them, ask them what they're learning etc.
    Overall a great experience!

    Just be yourself. They are looking for friendly, confident and approachable people. If you make sure you are well prepared for the interview and the assessment day you'll do absolutely fine. Also try to make sure you have some questions planned in advance to ask them to exemplify your interest in their company/the role.

    The assessment centre was a very enjoyable day, totally relaxed but obviously still important. The other candidates were all very friendly, and it definitely helped to know that I wasn't in competition with any of them. We had our individual presentations at different times so there was a fair bit of waiting around and chatting! The maths and English tests were very basic, all below GCSE level. Near the end of the day we were told to write a random word on a piece of paper to give to another candidate who then had to speak about the word for a minute. This was probably the hardest part of the day! Finally, there was a group activity about saving people on a shipwreck. I really enjoyed my day, particularily the lunch at Zizzi's getting to know everybody.

    No telephone interview: straight to centre interview.

    Greeted by one of the Assistant Directors. Was told to take a seat and was given an Explore Learning brochure to look through. Was briefly shown around the centre. (Make sure you have questions ready as they ask you a lot 'do you have any questions' throughout the tour).

    Was then greeted by the centre director and had an interview with them both. They asked me why I applied for the role, what I knew about the role, how i' d be suitable for the role, my best achievement etc. No scenario based questions were given to me at interview.

    Then had my role play: this I thought went well and not a lot of feedback was given back rather than to ask more questions to get to know the customer a bit better before you advertise your product (gym membership). Took this on board and after my second attempt was told I had done better and that I had took on board the feedback. That it was good that I got to know the customer more personally the second time round and secured a trial day.

    Was given 15 minutes with the children; the AD/CD however didn't really assess me as they weren't in the room whilst I was interacting with the children. I enjoyed this part the most and helped many of the children at their computer desks.

    Prepare questions to ask

    Make sure you know the role thoroughly; on my feedback on why I didn't get to assessment stage was because I didn't know enough about the role even though I mentioned the four main parts: management, sales and marketing, customer services and teaching throughout my interview (not sure how I would know about it any more thoroughly when I hadn't started the job yet?)

    Friendly, welcoming staff made the interview process pleasant and intimidating. There was multiple opportunities to gain feedback throughout the process which meant you could adapt and respond immediately. Both days enabled me to gain an insight into the company and it's ethos, enabling me to be sure it was the right choice for me as well as the right choice for them.

    The gym membership role play was tough to prep for as I was initially unsure what they were looking for.

    Interview tips

    Be confident and assertive. They are looking for people for have initiative and drive but also great interpersonal skills. Practical business awareness and common sense is key too. For the role play, be sure to ask questions rather than just doing a sales pitch, as they are looking for the ability to build rapport with a new customer.

    Interview process

    I initially applied online through an application form which asked about my experience in relation to areas of the job- different questions on sales and marketing, leading a team and working with children for example. This took around 2-3 hours so be prepared to give full detailed responses and to sell yourself well. After a few days, I was invited to a centre interview which was with two managers of that particular branch. This interview lasted two hours and was split into a tour of the centre, a competency and cv interview, a sales roleplay exercise and a child observation.

    The next stage was an assessment centre in Guildford which lasted the whole day. It was split into an individual interview, a marketing presentation, lunch and a written task.

    Most difficult question

    "A parent comes to the gate whilst you're in the middle of sorting out some figures for the head of Finance. He needs them urgently for a conference later that day. The parent looks very interested in our service and how we can benefit her children. What do you do?"

    Interview tips

    Research the company well and make sure you understand their vision and values and the job spec. A lot of the job is about performance, sales and marketing so be prepared to talk about relevant experience in that field and how you would make a difference to your centre's performance. Ensure you understand the hours as this makes a huge impact on the longevity of the job- they are long and unsociable so be prepared for that!
    The most important thing is just to be yourself and let your personality and passion for children shine through as this is what they mainly recruit on- lots of energy, positivism and smiles!

    We had to prepare a marketing presentation in advance which we then presented to the assessor. We could use notes and powerpoint if we liked. We then had to do a school roleplay and sell the benefits of the workshops to the teacher.

    In addition, there was an individual interview, focussing on cv, competency and scenario questions. Prepare for these in advance as best you can.

    There was a written task asking how you would tutor certain fraction and subtraction problems.

    We were taken to zizzi for lunch as well- just be yourselves!

    Finally, there was a group activity where you had to choose the five most important items that would help save you from drowning in the ocean when your ship crashes. Don't be alarmed if the assessors are mean to you- they do that on purpose!

    Interview process

    I had an initial telephone interview, which was with their recruitment team and lasted about 15 mins and was just about my experience and CV. Then I was invited to an interview in one of their centres. It was two interviewees, with basic questions about my experience and also scenario based questions like what I would do if someone complained of a colleague being racist or what I would do if the director was away and the teams performance started slipping. I also had to do a role play selling a gym membership, which they email information about previous to your interview. They then give you feedback and then you repeat the role play. Be sure to take their feedback on board for the second role play. Then I was just asked to chat with some children and they watched from a distance- this was the nicest part. Overall lasted about two hours. Was called the next day to be told I was through to the assessment centre round.

    Also the question about the performance of the team slipping whilst the director is on holiday and how I would combat it

    Interview tips

    Definitely do you research and prepare because you need to be able to sell the product assertively in the role plays. Put across your assertive manner and confidence because that is what they are looking for, you need to show you also love the product. I'd say this is more a marketing role than teaching so be sure you know this before going in.

    Again I was sent an email prior to the assessment day saying I had to prepare a presentation about marketing the explore product , and a role play with a primary school teacher who is interested in partnering with her school. This was done with two people watching. There was also another interview, one to one and maths and English tests which was pretty easy. There was then a lunch at Zizzi's in which they were definitely still assessing us! Finally there was a group session, one where we had to put items in priority from a shipwreck and where we all put words into a hat and had to talk about it for a minute.
