Working under the direction of the Head of Audit and Risk, we are seeking to appoint a trainee internal auditor to help us deliver an excellent internal audit service.

You will assist in providing assurance to internal and external stakeholders and their respective Section 151 Officers, helping to ensure that our clients achieve their objectives in an efficient and effective way.

The post is based at Wakefield District Headquarters, Havertop Lane, Normanton, but there will be a requirement to travel forcewide and within the Humberside Police area, for business purposes.

Operating as a shared service, the section reports to the Treasurer of the OPCC and the Assistant Chief Officer (Business Operations) of West Yorkshire Police, and provides audit services to West Yorkshire Police, Humberside Police and the National Police Air Service (NPAS).

We have a strong profile across the Yorkshire and the Humber (YatH) Region and we report on our audit work to the client’s respective audit committees.

Upon entry at Level 1, you will be supported in undertaking the Certified Internal Auditor qualification through the Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors. Once completed, you will be supported in becoming a Chartered Internal Auditor.

You will carry out a range of audit tasks, under direction and full supervision, using various audit techniques.

As you progress through Levels 1 to 5 of the career progression scheme, you will be provided with exciting opportunities to undertake increasingly complex pieces of work.

Audit work undertaken is risk based and highly varied in nature, including traditional financial systems as well as reviews of operational policing areas.

You could be working in police evidence stores, undertaking a review of the handling of police evidence, or considering the management of risks within specialist policing departments, such as Protective Services Crime or Operations Support.

We are looking for an individual who is highly numerate, with a methodical and analytical approach to work, and excellent written, oral and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will have an awareness and understanding of the internal audit function and its purpose.

Candidates will be: degree qualified; have at least two years internal audit experience, plus A levels; or have at least four years internal audit experience, plus GCSEs.

In addition, you must be prepared to work flexibly to suit the requirements of the department, and have an ability and willingness to travel for business purposes.
