Severn Trent provides the right formula, says gradNews
A graduate at Severn Trent Water says she has found the right mix of career opportunities for her science background.
Severn Trent Water is a leading water and waste water company and serves drinking water to 7.7 million people across the UK. The company needs a mixture of business people and scientists to ensure they continue to offer a fantastic and clean service and one graduate says this combination was perfect for her.
Rose Hartley studied for a PhD in Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Sheffield and before she joined Severn Trent Water. She says a purely scientific career wasn't for her, but Severn Trent offered her something different.
"While studying for my PhD, I decided I didn't want a highly-specialised scientific career. And I was disappointed by my first job in finance – I found it too restrictive," she says.
"That's why I applied to Severn Trent. The Business Leadership Programme is perfect for me. I still get to use my science knowledge, but I'm also developing new leadership skills."
The Business Leadership Programme is a rotational programme divided into three nine-month placements. Rose says the programme has allowed her to make a real impact.
"I've been given so much responsibility, like meeting with the execs or presenting my ideas on strategy – and I like that I can make that commercial impact."There's more in store for Rose and she says she can't wait.
"On my next placement I'll be a Service Delivery Manager at a sewage treatment site. I'm looking forward to the challenge of leading a big team on the ground," she says. "It'll be a lot more operational than what I'm doing now, so it's an exciting opportunity for me to develop more skills and get hands-on with a totally different type of project."
