Professional Qualification in Probation
This is your chance to work with some of the most challenging offenders in the UK - and turn their lives around. Train to be a Probation Officer.
What the role involves
There's no question that life as a probation officer is challenging. But it's also interesting and very worthwhile. After all, you'll be doing something incredibly valuable - helping offenders to rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society.
Day-to-day, the role is a balancing act. Obviously, you'll spend time supporting offenders directly. This will involve working in hostels, visiting prisons and attending courts. But just as importantly, you'll focus on the administrative side of things, including reading and writing reports.
On our Professional Qualification in Probation (PQiP), you'll develop crucial knowledge and experience. By the end, you'll be ready to work in the public sector, supervising some of the most high-risk offenders in society.
What you'll need
To apply for the programme, you'll need experience of working with people who are experiencing difficulties. You'll have shown that you're emotionally intelligent, resilient and calm under pressure: the kind of person who can build rapport quickly and de-escalate potentially volatile situations. Strong report-writing skills are also a must.
To apply, you will need a degree or a recognised level 5 qualification, or above, and to have completed four required knowledge modules in:
• The Criminal Justice System
• Understanding Crime and Criminal Behaviour
• Penal Policy and the Punishment of Offenders
• Rehabilitation of Offenders
You will also need relevant experience of working with challenging behaviour. There are a number of ways you can gain the qualifications you need. Please visit our website to find out more.
What we offer
In return, you'll receive a competitive salary and benefits package. You'll also be part of a supportive and friendly team environment - the perfect place to study towards your Professional Qualification in Probation (PQiP). We will sponsor and guide you through your studies, and we'll give you the right tools to make the most of this unique opportunity.
Who we are
We are the National Probation Service, the public sector provider of probation services across the UK. Our role is to protect the public by reducing reoffending. Together with the police, prisons and courts, we work directly with offenders to help them turn their lives around. And we engage with victims and communities to help them feel safer too.
