What the role involves
By managing offenders in prisons and the community, Probation Officers protect the public from the effects of crime, and give offenders the chance to turn their lives around. This is your chance to have a meaningful career with a difference.
While you earn your qualification, you’ll receive a salary and will develop your knowledge through a mixture of theory and practical training, as well as by working as a Probation Services Officer. You’ll visit prisons and attend courts – all to make interventions with offenders that enable them to understand their behaviour and want to change it.
Once you've qualified, you'll continue to grow and develop as a Probation Officer. No two days are ever the same here, so you'll learn from each new situation that arises as you begin to build your career.
Skills and experience
There is no single type of Probation Officer, but you will need emotional intelligence, resilience and the ability to stay calm under pressure. You’ll need to be the kind of person who can build rapport quickly and de-escalate potentially volatile situations. You’ll be happy to self-manage, and have a passion and commitment to your work, while excellent report-writing skills are also a must. Lastly, you should have some experience in working with people who have demonstrated challenging behaviour.
To apply, you will need a recognised Level 5 qualification or above, such as an honours degree, a foundation degree, a diploma of higher education, a Level 5 vocational qualification or a higher apprenticeship. It doesn’t matter what subject your Level 5 qualification is in. If successful, your previous education will be assessed and the correct length of the programme will be offered to you.
15 month programme:
If your existing Level 5 qualification includes 3 or more of the 4 knowledge modules listed below, you may be eligible to begin the 15 month PQiP qualification right away.
• The Criminal Justice System
• Understanding Crime and Criminal Behaviour
• Penal Policy and the Punishment of Offenders
• Rehabilitation of Offenders
21 month programme:
If you have not already completed the modules above as part of your existing Level 5 qualification, you will do that in your first 6 months of training. You will then complete the additional 15 month PQiP qualification. What we offer
You’ll receive a competitive salary and benefits package, including enrolment into the Local Government Pension Scheme. You’ll also be part of a supportive, diverse and friendly team environment – the perfect place to study towards your Professional Qualification in Probation (PQiP). You’ll also have support and guidance from The Divisional Training Manager, your line manager and your practice tutor throughout your studies to help you complete the course successfully.
Who we are
As part of Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS), The National Probation Service plays a vital role in the criminal justice system. Together with the police, prisons and courts, we help people turn their lives around and help our communities feel safer.
Salary of £22,261 (plus London weighting £3,889)
Moving to £29,038, on successful training completion and appointment, plus market force allowances in the above locations.
