Higher Executive Officer
Locations: Birmingham, Leeds, London
At the Department for Transport (DfT), we are responsible for delivering an exceptional transport network that connects communities, and enables people and goods to travel freely around the country. Encompassing everything from the decarbonisation of transport and the delivery of smart ticketing, through to the delivery of major infrastructure projects such as HS2, we strive to ensure that safe, reliable and cost-effective services are being delivered for the British public. With a focus on improving transport experiences for the user, we value our role in supporting the success of the UK’s businesses and the growth of the economy.
Explore a fascinating policy role
As one of our Policy Advisors, you will be involved in the creation of the most ambitious transport initiatives ever attempted in this country. Previous and ongoing projects span a vast array of topics such as drink and drug driving and e-scooter trials and many more like these. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills with the support of a highly collaborative and talented policy team. While previous civil service policy experience is not essential (as long as you have a policy background in a similarly complex organisation), you will have the aptitude and skills to help us deliver Ministerial objectives by engaging with internal and external stakeholders, and communicating with frontline experts to form a solid base on which to build our policy proposals. Every day will present you with new challenges, and you will have the scope to engage widely with external stakeholders. You will also enjoy plenty of support from senior colleagues as you handle discrete projects that will support the delivery of policy areas.
Put your career on a fascinating track
We are determined to create people-centred policies that are based on social research and behavioural insights, so this is an exciting opportunity to develop your skills in a well-respected team. Specific civil service policy experience is not essential, as long as you can bring transferable policy skills from a similarly large-scale organisation, with the capacity to compile and interpret evidence. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, and you will be an influential team-player who enjoys forming partnerships with colleagues and external experts. Capable of seeing the bigger picture, you will be able to work at pace, and you will always meet deadlines. You will also have the confidence to make recommendations based on your research, outlining key considerations such as costs, benefits and risks.
A truly diverse and inclusive workplace
DfT is a Disability Confident employer. We are committed to ensuring an accessible workplace and that disabled staff have the adjustments needed to be effective. At DfT our commitment to inclusion goes both ways and we look for our people to value inclusion just as much as we do. The Government has committed to moving 22,000 Civil Service roles out of London by 2030 which will enable us to get closer to the communities that we serve. This is an initiative that we have already embraced at DfT, with the creation of new hubs in Leeds and Birmingham. We are confident that this development will improve our policy making capabilities even further, as we want to create a more diverse and inclusive team that connects people with the places that mean the most to them. This move underpins our commitment to access and progress talent from all backgrounds, and as such, we are immensely proud to have been listed by the Social Mobility Employer Index as one of the ‘Top 75 UK Employers’ in 2020.
Expect more with the DfT
The DfT is a place where everyone can make a contribution. With a collaborative approach in which everyone works together and shares expertise, you will benefit from a supportive working environment. Furthermore, we want every employee to excel in their work, so we will provide you with a clearly defined career path with plenty of training and development opportunities, plus the scope to pursue a wide array of opportunities across the wider Civil Service – so there really is no saying where your career will take you. And while your career is undoubtedly important, so too is your financial future and emotional wellbeing. As such, we are proud to offer our people a highly competitive benefits package that is enhanced by various wellbeing initiatives and plenty of senior leadership support. With the freedom to get involved in projects that interest you, this is a unique chance to elevate your career exponentially.
