With a budget of over £100 billion, the NHS offers many challenges for aspiring Finance professionals. We aim to develop highly influential individuals, capable of contributing to our ongoing transformation. Helping to run our business in innovative ways, you’ll work alongside colleagues effectively and support the delivery of world-class healthcare in an ever-changing organisation.
Naturally, you’ll gain a good grounding in financial regulations and systems. In the longer term you can expect to be involved in critical decision-making - from revenue and capital investments, to the ways in which we use our resources to deliver the best possible patient care and value for money.
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to healthcare in England, so your training and experiences will be very diverse too. To get the most out of it, you’ll need to be bright, bold and open-minded. You’ll also need to be flexible and able to juggle a demanding education programme with a challenging full time role. You must be ready to gain exposure to the NHS at different levels, around different cultures and viewpoints - and anywhere in the country.
Over two and a half years, your professional learning will include a Postgraduate Certificate in Healthcare Leadership and a recognised finance qualification leading to membership of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA). At the same time, you’ll develop on the job, through a series of challenging placements. Throughout, you’ll enjoy support and guidance from a dedicated mentor and some of the best minds in the NHS.
Unique touches set the scheme apart. Your induction includes 20 days in which you set the agenda, experiencing NHS life on the frontline. So if you want to ride with an ambulance crew or observe an autopsy, you can. Later, you’ll arrange a 2 month ‘flexi-placement’ which could take you outside the NHS - it’s about you acquiring new perspectives to bring back to help the NHS.

You don’t need any previous relevant work experience but you will
