Excellent starting salary: £27,500 (Degree level) - £28,500 (Masters degree)

11 million homes will be powered by you

As the UK’s largest owner and operator of Gas Distribution networks in the UK, we distribute gas to approximately 11 million homes and businesses – that’s half of the UK. Gas is a key component of the UK’s energy mix, providing approximately 85% of the UK’s total domestic energy consumption.

To apply for this placement you'll need to be on track for a 2.2 degree classification or above in: Mechanical Engineering

Safety & Network Strategy is at the heart of the Gas Distribution business and carries out work that includes controlling how we safely operate our gas distribution networks. We also determine how and when we replace or maintain 130,000km of gas pipe and 700 installations that control the flow of gas through the network.

Safety & Network Strategy's main role is to achieve the best possible balance between risk, cost and performance over the lifecycle of our assets. To do that successfully, we need to know where our assets are, what we want from them, how to get the most out of them and that they're safe and reliable.

Programme overview

This programme will involve you in the day-to-day control of our network or put you at the forefront of asset investment, integrity management, policy development, technical innovation or the development of new and renewable sources of gas.

You’ll collaborate with our operational teams to promote the integrity and safe operation of our Gas Distribution assets, while overseeing the process safety performance for Gas Distribution. You’ll collate and analyse data to measure the quality and quantity of gas that we transport and propose changes that will benefit our network.

A big part of your role will be to promote an understanding of the future energy mix in the UK and the part that gas will play.
