Creating the cars of tomorrow is a challenge around 40,000 passionate Jaguar Land Rover colleagues take on every day. The way cars are created and driven is changing. And we are leading that change. Our vision is for a cleaner, smarter, more connected world where autonomous, connected, electrified and shared vehicles will replace the environmentally impactful world of the internal combustion engine. Throughout our history we have always taken on the challenges of creating the most prestigious, sustainable and desirable cars.

Hardware and mechatronics are at the heart of all Jaguar Land Rover vehicles and fundamental in how we respond to the future challenges in the automotive industry. From the vehicle dynamics and off-road capability, which serve as key differentiators for our brands, through to the door systems and headlamps, to glazing and seats, our engineers focus on everything from mechanical design and system integration to ensure detailed execution and the highest levels of craftsmanship.

Within Jaguar Land Rover, Hardware & Mechatronics engineering is responsible for all aspects of vehicle delivery. Defining features and attributes, integrating complex devices that control electromechanical systems and for the detailed engineering design, release and verification process that results in award winning products that provide experiences people will love for life.

We believe in delivering outstanding customer experiences. This is supported by the creative and innovative skills of our people as well as the range of tools and processes we use. Failure mode and effect analysis is fundamental to provide safety critical, high performing and high-quality systems for our customers. Through the design and verification process you will utilise both Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) toolsets to deliver the engineering specifications, and with world class System Engineering tools assist us in designing our electromechanical control systems.

As the customers vehicle interactions become more automated, an increasing amount of interactions with the mechanical systems are controlled with electronic modules.

During your placements you will get to experience a diverse range of projects covering many of these areas. For example;

If you were working in Electrical Engineering you will be working with multiple teams across the organisation to understand how the electronic and mechanical systems interface with one another. You will be required to engage with stakeholders across the vehicle platform to ensure a robust interaction between the electronic modules and mechanical movement, to provide the experience our customers will love for life. This could be from moving a seat to a position personalised to the occupant every time they use the vehicle, to improving the accessibility to the vehicle by opening the door upon request.

Or if you were working in Body Engineering, you may have a highly technical role as part of the CAE team or as part of a commodity such as seating. You will become part of a team focusing on delivering high quality engineering solutions but be required to work with many cross functional teams from design and attribute teams to purchasing and our suppliers.

As a component engineer, you would lead some activities to make sure components are engineered efficiently optimizing quality, performance and cost. For example, you may work with the wider engineering team on full vehicle simulations and the data from physical tests. These outputs are used to understand the system performance for attributes such as crash, durability and noise, and vibration and harshness (NVH). You will identify and make recommendations for component improvements maintaining the customer’s requirements at the forefront of decision making.

Excellence runs throughout our entire business and we expect you to be the same. So, as well as a degree in any engineering discipline; mechatronics; computer science/programming; physics, chemistry and Maths at 2:2 level or higher, you’ll need drive, creativity, a keen eye for detail, and a never-ending commitment to delivering results.

Through placements in your assigned area of engineering, you’ll discover our dedication to developing excellence runs throughout the business. Your innovation and creativity will be challenged every day, as you develop a rigorous and commercially focused approach to your work.

Your innovation and creativity will be challenged every day, as you develop a rigorous and commercially focused approach in your work. And, with on-going support from industry leading experts and continual learning opportunities, you’ll quickly realise that our programmes have been designed to be as inspiring as the pioneering vehicles you’ll help produce.

Whichever part of the business you join your hard work and contribution deserves recognition. You’ll receive a competitive salary of £29,000 per annum, a £2,000 joining bonus, along with a generous holiday allowance.
