The award-winning Fast Stream is the leadership development programme that develops the highest potential graduates to become the future leaders of the Civil Service. Joining the Fast Stream offers the unique opportunity to make a difference to the whole of society. The Civil Service supports the government of the day to implement its policies effectively. Fast Streamers help to shape the decisions that will affect everyone’s lives and to deliver the public services that we all rely on.
As a House of Commons Fast Streamer, you’ll work with politicians from all parties to scrutinise Government policy and support the UK’s democratic process. You will learn to command the confidence of MPs by providing them with impartial and assured advice, no matter how challenging the issue may be.
Through a variety of roles within the House of Commons you’ll manage enquiries and evidence sessions for a departmental Select Committee, and be involved in directly supporting the work of the Commons Chamber and assisting in the passage of legislation.
You can expect to facilitate debates, help scrutinise legislation and advise MPs on the best ways to achieve their parliamentary objectives. You will also assist in the management of Parliament and its daily business. You may also have the opportunity to work in other areas of the Parliamentary service such as:
- Media and communications;
- Diversity and inclusion;
- Research and information (the House of Commons Library); or
- Parliamentary estate management.
If you have an interest in politics, public policy, and the Constitution, this scheme will give you the experience and skills you need to develop your potential to be a future leader in the Parliamentary service. The minimum starting salary is £27,000-£29,000. Promotion and successful completion of the scheme will see you earn around £45,000 to £55,000.
While most of the learning is on the job you will also receive the following support:
- Induction week
- Regular training sessions and seminars
- Specialised programme of learning to help you gain an understanding of Parliament
- Procedural training course (with time to undertake within your job role).
- In-house and external training relevant to your job
- Development plan full of activities, training and milestones
- Support from your line manager, a training coordinator and Fast Stream talent managers.
We support applicants with health conditions, learning difficulties and disabilities, with their applications and through their Civil Service careers. We operate a Guaranteed Interview Scheme. If you have a disability and meet the minimum qualifying criteria for your chosen scheme, you may choose to skip part of the first stage of the assessment process.
You can choose up to 4 scheme preferences when you apply to the Fast
Stream. So, whether you are looking for your first graduate role,
seeking to return to work, or change profession, the Fast Stream is the
