Geomatics Industrial Placement - The Environment Agency

deadline - today

Working with the Environment Agency means working for our world. We’re an executive body of government that tackles environmental issues of national and international importance, ranging from flood defences to water quality, industry regulation, conservation and much more. Whether you’re joining as a graduate or an apprentice, this is a real chance to help protect and improve the environment while gaining exceptional experience in your specialism. Join us and start a career for change.

As a member of our Geomatics team, you will have the chance to gain sector-leading experience while completing your degree. Ideally coming from a course such as Geomatics, GIS, Remote Sensing or a Geography-related degree, you will have completed a minimum of two years of your studies, though you will not be due to graduate before the summer of 2022. Over the 12-month duration of the placement, you will be learning directly from specialists delivering high quality spatial data products.

Immersing yourself in a range of fascinating remote sensing and GIS data analysis challenges, you will handle everything from processing raw point cloud data that has been captured by cutting-edge airborne LIDAR and digital aerial camera systems, through to creating digital terrain models by producing digital surface models and classifying surface objects. When floods and environmental disasters happen, you will work flexibly to survey and monitor these incidents, and you will develop crucial skills such as how to conduct spatial analysis of elevation and other spectral datasets, plus how to generate QC reports. With your work impacting on flood modelling, habitat mapping, asset management, plus environmental and urban planning, this is a career-defining opportunity to learn sector-leading skills in a progressive and inclusive workplace, while helping us shape a better world.

Every day will present you with new learning opportunities – such as the creation of seamless photo mosaics through ortho-rectification of colour and near-infrared airborne imagery – so you will excel in this role if you are determined to pursue a career in geomatics or the environmental sector. Crucially, you will have exceptional spatial awareness, and you will have a good understanding of GIS and remote sensing. If you have a basic knowledge of LIDAR systems, other remote sensing platforms or ESRI GIS software that would be beneficial, although these are things that you can learn when you join us. You will also underpin your problem-solving and analytical capabilities with fantastic communication and team-playing skills, plenty of initiative, well developed computer skills and a can-do attitude.

We make sure to support each other as we work hard to protect and improve the environment. That means everything from getting real opportunities to grow your skills to benefitting from outstanding coaches and mentors. On top of this, you’ll get access to our great benefits package, such as generous annual leave, an excellent pension, all kinds of flexible working arrangements, a variety of staff networks and travel and childcare allowances. We recognise the challenges that people with (multiple) protected characteristics may experience on the job market. We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities. We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as possible, and we hope to attract applications from underrepresented groups, including Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) people, people with a disability, and people with gender diverse identities.

We’re the Environment Agency. We protect and improve the environment and make it a better place for people and wildlife. We operate at the place where environmental change has its greatest impact on people’s lives. We work closely with a wide range of partners to make sure we are reducing the risk from flooding to communities, there is enough water for people and wildlife; protect and improve air, land and water quality and apply the environmental standards within which industry can operate.
