Flood Risk Modelling & Hydrology Industrial Placement - Environment Agency
Location: Warrington, Exeter, Worthing, Reading, Peterborough, or Leeds
Working with the Environment Agency means working for our world. We’re an executive body of government that tackles environmental issues of national and international importance, ranging from flood defences to water quality, industry regulation, conservation and much more. Whether you’re joining as a graduate or an apprentice, this is a real chance to help protect and improve the environment while gaining exceptional experience in your specialism. Join us and start a career for change.
As a member of our Evidence & Risk team, you will have the chance to gain sector-leading experience while completing your degree. Ideally coming from a course such as Geography, Environmental Science, Hydrology, Natural Science, Maths, Coastal Processes, Coastal Management, or Geomatics (or with a mapping element making up part of your degree), you will have completed a minimum of two years of your studies, though you will not be due to graduate before the summer of 2022. Over the 12-month duration of the placement, you will learning directly from specialists who are passionate about creating a climate-resilient nation.
Developing your passion for flood risk management, you will work with experts who are sector-leaders in the fields of river and coastal flood risk modelling and forecasting. We are committed to developing ambitious forecasting and flood management approaches, and you will gain technical skills in this – plus a multitude of other fields such as hydrology and hydraulic modelling, and how to forecast fluvial, coastal and surface water modelling. Learning about the specifics of building, running and analysing detailed mathematical models, you will also develop skills in software such as Flood Modeller and TuFlow. We will also ensure you develop a good understanding of the practicalities of producing seamless evidence that will be used to determine the potential impact of flood risk and management approaches on communities, making this is an exciting opportunity to learn the types of skills that will ensure a successful career in the sector.
This is an unparalleled chance to put your career on a fascinating trajectory. We work with a wide range of partners such as environmental consultants and the national Flood Forecasting Centre, and we are integral to the nation’s flood incident response. As such, you will have the opportunity to handle both historic data and monitor live events. We champion a highly collaborative and inclusive workplace, so you will excel with us if you bring an inquisitive mindset to all that you do, and you must enjoy coming up with innovative solutions to complex problems. As a highly analytical individual, you will have a good understanding of GIS and data management, and you will be keen to learn. Crucially, you will be a team-player with exceptional communication skills, and you will be computer literate, plus highly proactive and organised.
We make sure to support each other as we work hard to protect and improve the environment. That means everything from getting real opportunities to grow your skills to benefitting from outstanding coaches and mentors. On top of this, you’ll get access to our great benefits package, such as generous annual leave, an excellent pension, all kinds of flexible working arrangements, a variety of staff networks and travel and childcare allowances. We recognise the challenges that people with (multiple) protected characteristics may experience on the job market. We are fully committed to being an inclusive employer and ensuring equal opportunities. We are keen to make our workforce as diverse as possible, and we hope to attract applications from underrepresented groups, including Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) people, people with a disability, and people with gender diverse identities.
