The award-winning Fast Stream is the leadership development programme that develops the highest potential graduates to become the future leaders of the Civil Service. Joining the Fast Stream offers the unique opportunity to make a difference to the whole of society. The Civil Service supports the government of the day to implement its policies effectively. Fast Streamers help to shape the decisions that will affect everyone’s lives and to deliver the public services that we all rely on.

There's no such thing as a typical Diplomatic career. You could be based in London or working in one of the Foreign Office's small, challenging or remote embassies, or working on global issues in one of our large embassies in Washington and Paris.

You might focus on bilateral work, multilateral work, consular support, media and communications, project management or decide to specialise in a particular region of the world.

Foreign Office staff change roles routinely every 3 to 4 years. You’ll apply for each role according to your preferences, career ambitions, and personal circumstances.

Your training will help your understand how the Foreign and Commonwealth Office work and also diplomatic tradecraft:

  • Job-specific training, often including a visit to one of our embassies overseas.
  • A buddy from the previous year’s Fast Stream intake
  • Coaching and mentoring available.

The minimum starting salary is £28,000. We support applicants with health conditions, learning difficulties and disabilities, with their applications and through their Civil Service careers. We operate a Guaranteed Interview Scheme. If you have a disability and meet the minimum qualifying criteria for your chosen scheme, you may choose to skip part of the first stage of the assessment process

All Diplomatic Service Fast Streamers must be granted ‘Developed Vetting’ security clearance before starting. You can also apply for the Diplomatic Service (Economics) scheme provided you meet the eligibility criteria.

You can choose up to 4 scheme preferences when you apply to the Fast Stream. So, whether you are looking for your first graduate role, seeking to return to work, or change profession, the Fast Stream is the ideal place to progress a meaningful, fulfilling career.
