The Company

The West Midlands Graduate Internships Scheme (WMGI) matches unemployed graduates with West Midlands based employers who can offer an internship. Designed to help tackle the effects of the economic downturn in the region, the scheme is a proactive collaboration between Advantage West Midlands, regional universities and Jobcentre Plus.

The West Midlands Graduate Internships are unpaid and can last between 4 weeks and 6 months, and should be graduate level work for a maximum of 30 hours a week. The remainder of that time enables the graduate to search for paid work and attend fortnightly signing on/training sessions with Job Centre Plus.

The WMGI Scheme is supported by Jobcentre Plus who provide employment training and advice on claiming Job Seekers Allowance, travel and childcare costs (assessed on an individual basis) whilst the graduate is undertaking their placement.

Case Studies

Name: Thom

I’m very pleased with what I’ve achieved in a short timescale. I have learnt to use and produce work on new software programs & my organisational skills are really developing.. I’ve settled well into the team & everyone is very nice and supportive.

Name: Louise

The Internship is giving me valuable work experience & the opportunity to interact with people I wouldn’t normally come into contact with. An example of this is that I’ve had the opportunity to attend as minute taker for the Port Vale Steering Committee, consisting of members from UNITE & the C.W.U. I am also doing learning diary as agreed with my employer, which is helping me to reflect on my achievements.

Name: Ken

I’m gaining real world experience in an IT company - working on small, fast paced development projects. I’m also working on concurrent projects & managing my time across these.
