Graduate job hunters stand to benefit from the news that permanent appointments increased for the first time in four months during January.
Research from over 400 recruitment firms showed an increase in job opportunities at the start of 2012, although there were also more job seekers chasing each position. Six out of eight sectors surveyed reported a greater demand for employees, including engineering, IT and office professionals.
The news was most positive for engineering graduates as engineers and construction workers were most in demand, according to the report by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) and KPMG. Many employers reported having openings for graduates and other entry-level positions, as well as roles for more experienced candidates.
Kevin Green, chief executive of the REC, said this report was a positive sign that the jobs market was moving in the right direction.
Bernard Brown, head of business services at KPMG, said the news was a welcome surprise, especially considering the current uncertainty surrounding the eurozone and the knock-on effect that has had on business confidence.
