As many as 30,000 applications could be submitted to a graduate scheme run by accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) this year, new figures indicate.
According to the firm, the record number of applications could come despite the fact only 1,200 places are actually available.
At present, more than 200 applications for the initiative are being received each day by the organisation.
PwC UK chairman and senior partner, Ian Powell, told the The Daily Telegraph newspaper that the number of entries has been "incredible" this year.
He added: "There are not the same opportunities out there now. People are looking for the security of a professional qualification."
Compared with the applications made for the 2011 graduate scheme, 50% more have been submitted for this year's programme, Mr Powell explained.
But strong candidates could potentially be missed as a result of the large number of applications, he warned.
