Work has begun on a state-of-the-art rail operating centre, signalling the creation of hundreds of new jobs in Sussex.
Representatives from Network Rail and Southern trains were joined by MP Henry Smith at the Three Bridges operating centre, which is set to become the main hub of railway operations in Sussex.
The centre, along with two other major projects planned for Three Bridges, will bring in over 900 jobs in total to the area. The rail operating centre is one of 14 planned across Britain to replace over 800 signal boxes and other operations used to control trains across the network.
The two projects include the building of a railway maintenance depot for the new Thameslink trains in early 2012 and a collection of improvements to the station and subway by Network Rail and Southern.
It is hoped these works will mean 600 roles could move to Three Bridges over the next 10 to 15 years.
