UK graduates will be delighted to hear that up to 650 jobs are to be created at Swansea University's new medical research centre.

The multimillion-pound Centre for Nanohealth at the institute of Life Science is to focus on developing new technologies that will improve medical screening, for example by using biosensors to detect diseases.

The research is part of the £52 million centre's new phase, which has received funding worth £10 million from the Welsh Government and another £12.8 million from the EU. The first phase included setting up a supercomputer centre and laboratories.

First Minister Carwyn Jones said the centre, which opened in 2007 and is part of the university's college of medicine, will soon offer leading research and skilled graduates.

He added: "It is a unique collaboration between government, academia and the private sector that not only provides medical expertise and research, but also economic development by nurturing new companies and creating jobs."
