UK graduates are being encouraged to consider careers in the manufacturing industry.
The Government has launched See Inside Manufacturing, an initiative piloted by automotive firms, which will see them open up factories and offices to students and young people.
The coalition has also announced a £170 million package in order to improve the UK's competitiveness while promoting careers in the industry.
More than £140 million is to be poured into a manufacturing technology and innovation centre over the next six years. It has been formed from seven research facilities across the UK.
Investments will also be made into developing low-carbon vehicles and new products using advanced materials, biosciences and nanoscale technologies.
Iain Gray, chief executive of the Technology Strategy Board, said: "Manufacturing is a priority sector for the Technology Strategy Board to support with a technology and innovation centre.
"The new centre will help UK businesses stay at the leading edge of manufacturing technology and create and protect jobs long into the future."
