GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has announced that it is set to create 1,000 new jobs in the UK.
Of these, around 600 will be in the biopharmaceutical sector with the rest spread across other departments, the company said. It did not however specify a timescale for the roles.
The move follows the Chancellor Alistair Darling's announcement in December that the Government plans to introduce a special tax regime for patents in the UK, known as the "patent box".
Under the plan, the government will provide a special corporation tax rate on UK patent income from April 2013.
With this initiative, the Government aims to encourage businesses operating in the fields of intellectual property and innovation to establish their base in the UK as well as to stop companies already based in the UK from relocating all or part of their businesses abroad.
GSK and the Bio Industry Association, which represents the UK's bioscience sector, has urged the Government to follow other countries including Switzerland, the Netherlands and Belgium that have already introduced similar initiatives.
