A new career mentoring scheme to improve graduates' employability has been launched by the University of Bradford.

The scheme is also aimed at providing opportunities to engage with local businesses.

Funded by the career development services, the scheme aims to give students an insider view of work, an insight into a job role and the opportunity to gain knowledge of specific industries.

Mentors from businesses including Hallmark Cards, Yorkshire Water and the Crown Prosecution Service will help develop students' career ideas. Students will receive advice and support for up to six months.

The university's head of career and development services, Ron Harle, said the scheme is mutually rewarding for the student and mentor.

"In an extremely tough graduate labour market it offers the students a chance to develop workplace knowledge, gain confidence and gives them a competitive edge." he said.

One mentor, Tamsin Cooper, of Drydens Lawyers in Bradford, said: "It's an excellent opportunity to use your business, people and management skills to the benefit of the wider community and share your experience with enthusiastic and motivated students."
