Journalism graduates on Cardiff University's post-graduate journalism course will be given the opportunity to receive a £5,500 bursary from the BBC.

The journalism bursary has been set up by BBC Wales in memory of former sports correspondent Bob Humphrys, who died of cancer in August 2008.

Applicants for the bursary who have already been accepted to the post-graduate course will then be invited for interview by BBC Wales in order for the funding to be awarded to the most suitable candidate.

The successful bursary candidate will be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to a career in the media in Wales.

Interviews and assessments will take place in March and April and the BBC will award the Bob Humphrys Bursary in July to the aspiring journalist.

The person who receives the bursary will also be given several weeks' work experience at BBC Wales.

Mr Humphrys presented Wales Today's sports coverage for 20 years before taking early retirement last year.

His widow, Julie, said: "After he died, we had so many letters from people who said how much he had helped them along the way, so the fact that it is going to a journalist just starting out is very fitting."
