Biotechnology and life science graduates will be competing for up to three new posts being created as part of an expansion project by a Sunderland DNA testing company.
Thanks to a £48,000 grant from regional development agency One North East, Complement Genomics will also be able to buy hi-tech equipment for use in conducting paternity testing and other DNA analysis.
The funding will allow the company to buy two new machines which will increase productivity and capacity by cutting the time it takes to analyse DNA samples.
The expansion will safeguard the existing five-strong laboratory team and see the creation of up to three new graduate jobs.
Complement Genomics is one of only eight providers in the UK approved by the Government to carry out parentage tests, and also provides forensic testing, toxicology and drug analysis.
Its chief executive, Louise Allcroft, commented: "The addition of these new pieces of equipment to our facilities will allow us not only to increase our competitiveness and bid for larger contracts, but will also improve upon the level of service we already offer our existing clients by giving them access to better technology and an even faster turnaround of results."
