Objective
To assist in the on going development of the city councils sustainable waste management services. This will take the form of a variety of different approaches from direct face-to-face interactions with residents to working with the refuse crews. To assist the waste and recycling team in reacting to issues brought about by the implementation of the council’s three-bin scheme as part of this frontline service.
Background
Peterborough City council is a leading unitary authority with a recycling rate to date of 36%. The Council offers its residents a variety of waste and recycling services including the kerbside collection of waste, recycling and organic garden waste. The council also has mini recycling centres across the city, a Householder recycling centre and its very own Materials Recycling Facility (where recyclables go to be sorted before reprocessing). The Council also runs a facility called the WEEE Recycle facility where electrical goods are recycled or reused. There is also a composting site and a landfill in Peterborough, which the Council uses.

Graduates will benefit from gaining direct knowledge and experience of recycling and waste minimisation issues at a grassroots level, working with this young and dynamic team. Graduate from this position have gone directly into a variety of related fields, some examples being, Green, White and Young Environmental Consultancy, Community Check Waste and Environmental Management Programme, and also SWAP (Save Waste And Prosper).
Output 1
Increased awareness and change in attitude of residents, leading to an increased participation of the recycling and waste minimisation schemes
Output 2
Reduction in difficulties associated with the waste minimisation and recycling schemes, such as contamination and accessibility issues using education, and in certain circumstances, enforcement action.
Key Task 1
To assist in the development of the existing alternate weekly waste and recycling collections across the city. This will be dealt with by addressing issues raised by the crews. This will involve dealing with excess waste and contamination issues within households and difficult to reach properties areas across the city on a round by round basis...
Key Task 2
Promotion of the new scheme and existing schemes such as home composting through events, road shows, household surveys and presentations. To ensure that the public understands the aims of the waste minimisation and the various recycling schemes
Key Task 3
Dealing with correspondence, queries and complaints in respect of the services raised by elected Members and members of the public.
Key Task 4
To assist in combating mis-use of all recycling collection schemes e.g. contamination, obstruction and excess waste left out beside the refuse and recycling containers.
The requirement of a driving licence is essential for this position.
