Recruitment Consultant – Case Study

Name: Liz Maskell
University: MMU
Course: BA (Hons) International Business
Graduation year: 2010
Job title: Recruitment Consultant – Sales Sector

What does your role as a recruitment consultant involve day to day?

My role is really varied day to day but some of my main duties are:

  • New business development – calling and marketing to companies to attract business (vacancies for us to recruit for).
  • Client Account development and management – I book, attend and give presentations at client meetings with my director – learning more about their company and my market sector.
  • Headhunting – this involves calling people I feel would be suitable for a vacancy and presenting a new position to them that is better than their existing one.
  • Interviewing candidates everyday both on the phone and face to face to assess their suitability for roles and to go in to more detail about the responsibilities, salary and benefits of the role I’m recruiting for.
  • Assisting candidates with their interview process, techniques and finally handing their notice in
  • Negotiating fees and salary rates with clients

How did you get in to recruitment? What other options were you considering at the time?

I was lucky enough to have a placement as part of my degree during which time I did a sales role for a large IT company. I really enjoyed my time there so after I graduated I applied for a sales role through RedPepper. When I came in to interview with my now director, he said that they were recruiting for themselves. Recruitment wasn’t something that I’d ever considered previously but the amount of money that can be made, the variety in the role and the scope for career progression really attracted me. A year on, I’m really happy I made the move in to recruitment and most people I speak to in the industry say that they ‘fell’ in to it as a career.

Why did you choose recruitment?

There were lots of factors including:

  • The money – I’m on a good basic and a 15% commission rate, I am guaranteed a £500 pay rise every quarter if I hit target, my next target after that is 20% commission and then 25% commission.
  • Quarterly incentives for hitting targets like nights out and holidays and spot prizes like gift vouchers for placements.
  • The fact that I had progression mapped out for me – Every time I hit a certain target I will progress from executive to consultant to senior and managing consultant.
  • A smaller company – as a grad I think you fall in to the trap of thinking the bigger the company, the better it is but in a smaller company you’re more dynamic and flexible, it’s obvious who’s doing well and you get a lot more say in the day-to-day decisions in the business.
  • Culture – to succeed in recruitment you have to have a big personality which means great colleagues and good nights out.
  • Great training, both at the start because there is loads to learn; and ongoing development.

How do you see your career progressing in recruitment?

I have already progressed from a recruitment executive to a consultant which meant a rise in my commission structure. Moving forwards I want to become a senior consultant and look after some large key accounts for the business rather than managing people although this was an option for me.

What have been some of your biggest challenges?

The biggest challenge in recruitment is being able to take the rough with the smooth – there’s no better feeling than when you’ve made a placement but on the flip side, you will get drop outs and no shows for interviews but it’s all about keeping yourself motivated.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Every day is so different, I speak to new people every day who all have different CVs, careers and backgrounds. On the flip side I’ve had a lot of exposure by dealing every day with Managing Directors with vast amounts of experience so I’m constantly learning.

And of course, making placements !

What would you say to someone else considering a role in recruitment?

If you have a big personality, you’re competitive and up for a challenge then there’s a lot of money to be made in recruitment as well as fast track career progression in a relatively short amount of time when compared to lots of other industries.
