The Company:

RM is a company at the top of its game. We are the UK’s leading provider of software systems, services and infrastructure to schools, colleges and universities.

As an organisation, we are guided by a simple vision. To help teachers to teach and learners to learn. To make this happen, we insist on two things. Using the best technology. And encouraging and developing our people to become the very best at what they do.

Looking at us now, it’s clear this has been a successful formula. The scope of work today is huge. Whether we’re developing award-winning hardware, life-enhancing software, or entire ICT strategies for local authorities, we’re at the forefront of every aspect of educational technology.

Just as our innovation knows no bounds, our work touches all aspects of education. Visit our website to learn about some of RM’s award-winning products - as well as some of the exciting projects we’re involved in.

Just to get you started here’s one of our current projects:

Building Schools for the Future is no ordinary initiative. With £2.2 billion committed in the first year alone, it represents the single biggest investment programme in education for over 50 years. By rebuilding or renewing every secondary school in England, it aims to transform the education landscape - and with it the life chances of millions of learners.

Graduate training and profiles:

Educational achievements are of course important. That’s why we’re looking for applicants with a minimum of a 2.1 degree and at least 260 UCAS points. But it’s your personal qualities, experience and aptitude we look at most closely. Things like problem-solving skills, your ability to work in a team, a real feel for what the customer wants and plenty of energy and enthusiasm.

Case Study
Case study: Andy WebbName: Andy Webb
Role: Development Engineer

In my role at RM I’m a product development engineer in our hardware division. Hardware development generally revolves around the following products – desktop PC, mobile PC or servers.

As a development engineer I’m involved in all aspects of the products life, this includes:
•  Specification and design
•  Sourcing
•  Testing
•  Implementation
•  Support

Normally I would be the lead engineer on one or two large projects e.g. the introduction of a new server. In addition to this I may take on a couple of other process improvement projects. These are fairly open in scope and really give you a chance to show your creative side when proposing new solutions.

The nature of my role means that I get to work with a wide variety of people.

  • Internally my project work brings me into contact with representatives from all across the business, including manufacturing, support, marketing and software development.
  • The external meetings are equally as exciting, there are always meetings with suppliers who are updating us on their roadmaps, or presentations informing us about new technologies.

Recently I have been very fortunate to visit our suppliers in China and Taiwan to conduct factory audits, and to work on the development on one of our new products.

  • My department also serves as the last line of technical escalation. This can mean site visits to a school. I find these visits among the most interesting as seeing the end user gives an entirely different perspective on what you do!

I knew that RM was the company I wanted to work for after my first interview with the company: they were enthusiastic, friendly and very people orientated.

Most importantly they made it clear that I wouldn’t be pigeonholed – this was important as it felt they were investing in me from a long term perspective.

The industry in which we operate also appealed, the challenges that you face in the education market are different to those that you face in other industries. Add to this the fact that the world of IT moves at an incredible pace – there is always a new technology to get excited about!
