Aldi quashes graduate fears with robust recruitment opportunities
As graduates leave university this summer with the same high hopes they held three years ago when they
embarked upon their degree courses, they will be joining a much longer ‘careers queue’. Figures out
this week show that there are 2.47 million people unemployed this year. Nonetheless, real opportunities
are available for young people looking to start a successful career, if they look in the right places.
Discount retailer ALDI is helping graduates onto the career ladder. By investing in the highest
achievers and taking on the best talent leaving university this year, ALDI is supporting graduates who
are determined to develop their careers in retail management.
Ranked number 3 in the Times Top 100 Graduate Employer Survey the recruitment programme is ahead of all
major retail competitors.
Kate Munton, 25, from Bath joined the ALDI Graduate Recruitment scheme in 2007 after graduating from
Edinburgh University with a degree in modern languages. Having to convince her family and friends that
a job in the City was not for her, Kate comments on her decision to join ALDI: ‘I always knew that I
wanted to work in management. I worked in a bar alongside my studies and got a taste for being
responsible for a team of people and loved the daily challenges I faced. I first became interested in
ALDI when I attended a career fair in London and was attracted by the training programme, the
opportunities for progression and the incredible package. Many of my peers were looking at jobs in the
City but I knew a desk job wasn’t for me.
‘After a gruelling interview process I was as convinced as ever that ALDI was for me. ALDI made it clear
from the beginning that it would be a challenge, which it certainly has been but equally as rewarding. ‘
The challenge of the role has been a highlight of Kate’s career as she explains: ‘Within eight months I
was responsible for running my own area and four months later I opened a new store in Exeter. It was a
huge task to complete everything but the support I had from ALDI every step of the way made a huge
difference. Every new recruit at ALDI is allocated a mentor who is there to help you out when you need
it, the store opening was intense but it gave me the chance to put all of my training into practice, it
was extremely rewarding and I experienced true job satisfaction.’
Kate has been with the company for a little over a year and is already an Area Manager. She is
responsible for stores in Plymouth, Bridgewater and two in Exeter. During her spare time Kate enjoys
playing tennis and believes her sporty lifestyle has stood her in good stead for a demanding work
schedule.
