Case Study
Case study: Bassaam Maudarbocus Name: Bassaam Maudarbocus
Degree: Actuarial Science
University: Cass Business School, City of London
Role: Actuarial Student

BACKGROUND

Bassaam had already undertaken a twelve-month placement at AXA as part of his degree. He recalls that it gave him a real taste of what he’d be doing in the future.

“We didn’t go deep into the technical side of actuarial science on the placement,” he says. “It was more a question of getting to know the company, doing interesting work and liking the people that I was with. I applied to come back as a graduate when I’d finished my final year of study and AXA offered me a place.”

THE ROLE

The graduate training scheme for actuaries at AXA allows Bassaam to gain experience in different parts of the business through specialist placements lasting 15 to 18 months each. He is now focusing on Life Reserving, helping to calculate how much money AXA needs to pay out all of their policy holders.

“I’ve only been on the scheme for about eight months,” observes Bassaam, “but I’m already getting an awesome amount of responsibility I just wouldn’t get in other places. I’m working in a small team, using stochastic runs to produce realistic balance sheets, which are vitally important to the business as a whole.”

Bassaam can turn to a number of more experienced colleagues for technical advice, and also has a mentor who acts as a personal adviser. This support ensures that people with the right numerate degree can make a success of the role.

There’s a positive culture, too. “People are very friendly,” says Bassaam. “We also have a great building in Bristol with loads of facilities including a WH Smith, cafés and a gym where I also play five-a-side football. On a Friday after work, people often have a few drinks together in the bar.”

EXAMS AND SUPPORT

Bassaam is a fair way through his training and exams, helped by a couple of exemptions allowed because of the actuarial content of his degree. Generally there are 15 different examinations before you can get to call yourself a qualified actuary. “AXA give you a day off a week to study,” he says, “and they also sponsor your course materials and tutorials, which is a big relief, as they can work out very expensive!”

THE FUTURE

Qualifying as an actuary is clearly on the horizon for Bassaam, after which he may choose to specialise in a particular part of the AXA business. For the moment, however, he’s focused on studying for the exams. In a business the size of AXA, there will be plenty of opportunities in the future.
