How is a degree in Business and Management useful?

Graduates who studied business and management degrees are amongst the most valuable. All jobs are set within some kind of business model; even if they are in the public or third sector there is a business model used to ensure goals are acheived and tasks completed on time and to budget.

What can I expect to be doing as a Business and Management graduate?

There a wide selection of sectors open to those who studied business and management at university. Obviously there are management roles but have you ever thought about HR, logistics or buying and merchandising? The reason that so many sectors and graduate jobs are available with a degree of this type is because it gives you a host of transferable skills that can be used in nearlly all work environments. At the heart of the skill set is logical, tactical and most importantly, productive thinking with a good grasp of mathematics. From this you could expect to work in any department from finance to recruitment but you will always be employing those key skills that you adopted from your degree - time, task and people management.

Career Progression

What department you enter will naturally dictate where your graduate career takes you so it's tough to say exactly where a business and management graduate will head. However, most graduate employers take on these people with a view for accelerated progression; after a year you could expect a promotion and if you continue to produce results then another soon after that. What many business and management graduates find is that no matter what sector or department they work in they can move back into a key management role later down the line if they wish.

The Challenges

The cons of having a business and management degree are few but are worth keeping in mind so that you can compensate for them as best as possible. The main downside is that there are many graduates with a similar or same degree meaning that you have a lot of competition to beat. For this reason it means making sure your CV, covering letters and applications are on top form in order to bag yourself an interview.

One other problem is that the degree is not very specific. This is a double-edged sword because as you can see above, I have been listing all the reasons why this is a great thing. Yes, it means there are a lot of doors open to you, but it means you have to prove that you're good enough just a little bit more in order to get through one of them.

Expected Salary

For your first role expect the usual graduate salary of £18,000 to £23,000. As you improve, learn and demonstrate your productivity you can expect to quickly increase this to nearer the £30,000 mark and once you have a a decent management role where you are fully in charge of a team/department this will be £40-50k.
